Passage: James 4:11-5:6

Preacher: Rob Holster

Series: The Rules of Following Jesus

Summary:

Last time we finished with these words–"Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will exalt you." The reason for the lack of peace in our lives, and the reason for quarreling and fighting is the flesh–the sinful nature that we still carry with us. It wars against the Spirit who is changing us–day by day–into something new and good. Therefore we are to humble ourselves before God–don't give in to the world's ways and don't give in to the devil. Resist him. Resist the urge to live like we don't know Jesus and the new life He has brought. Instead, let Him in–let the Spirit work to change us. Don't try to make yourself great–let God make you great. And so James continues in chapter 4, v. 11 with three ways in which we can exercise humility. It's almost as if–after James tells us to be humble–someone asks the question, "What do you mean?" Because he's going to offer some clarification through three warnings. As if to say, "Here's what I'm talking about–here's what you're doing that is selfish and not humble."
