Where's The Fruit?

Where's The Fruit?

Feb 15, 2026

Passage: Matt. 21:18-22

Preacher: Rob Holster

Series: Gospel of the Kingdom

Summary:

In John 15:5 Jesus says, "I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing." This abiding in Christ is supposed to bear fruit. But what is that fruit? And once we answer that question, we are faced with another––where is that fruit? Meaning, is it being produced in our lives? Are we bearing good fruit? That's what the story is all about this week from Matthew 21:18-22, when Jesus curses a fig tree. That's right, he curses it--and it withers and dies. And like the story from last week––it doesn't sound like something Jesus would do. Last week we looked at Jesus cleaning out the temple––driving out all those who did business there––because they were doing crooked business in a place of prayer. But it seemed like an isolated, almost violent event, in the otherwise peaceful life of Jesus. I mentioned that Jesus did it for a purpose––in front of everyone––as his time had now come to reveal who he was and what he came to do. The episode we'll cover today is the same way––and his purpose is to teach.
