Passage: Matthew 1:1-17

Preacher: Rob Holster

Series: Gospel of the Kingdom

Summary:

We're starting the Gospel of Matthew this week. It was written by the disciple of Jesus named Matthew (or Levi, as his Hebrew buddies would have called him). It was written to the heavily Jewish community of early believers so there's a lot of references to things they would know and find important. Things like calling Jesus Messiah (or Christ), talking about the Kingdom of Heaven, the fulfillment of Old Testament prophecies, and even the criticism of the Jewish leadership of the day. But the beauty of God's Word is that it is useful, practical, and transformative to anyone who cares to read it. It is inspired text–meaning that it's what God wants people to know about His Son. And so we're asking the question this week, "Who is Jesus?" This book answers that question, but it also helps answer the question, "How are we to follow Jesus in our day?" because the truths contained are timeless. Yes, it was written to help a group of Jewish Christians in the first century, but it was written in such a way that we can all glean the truth about the Christ, the Messiah, the King–Jesus. In other words, we can know Him.
