Passage: James 3:13-18

Preacher: Rob Holster

Series: The Rules of Following Jesus

Summary:

As we continue our journey through the book of James we are reminded of what is missing in our lives. We have been given the Spirit to live within us–to transform us from the inside out–but sometimes it's like we're not listening. We keep on thinking with our flesh, speaking from our flesh, and making decisions in the flesh. We like to think we are wise, but is that true? We've already been told in chapter 1 to ask God for wisdom when we are lacking–but to truly have sincere faith when we ask–to live as if God really will give us the wisdom we need. And he says that because I think we tend to hedge our bets, so to speak. We want to trust God, but it's just so hard when the world is telling us something else–or is influencing us to believe that following God in faith is NOT wise. So who is wise in that scenario? Shouldn't we trust God, but also add our own worldly wisdom to it? As if to enhance it? Well, I think we already know the answer, but here in the last part of James 3 this week, where he talks about "wisdom from above" we're going to take a look at what it means to be truly wise–not in a worldly sense–but in a faithful way. It's a great passage and a good reminder.
