Passage: Matthew 19:23-30

Preacher: Rob Holster

Series: Gospel of the Kingdom

Summary:

Last time in our study of Matthew we covered the story of the rich young man, who came to Jesus with the question: "Teacher, what good deed must I do to have eternal life?" It's an interesting question that we all want to know the answer to––because it's human nature to think of salvation that way. The man thought it was earned––but he's not alone––so many people think that, because it's human nature to think that. It's definitely built into our 21st century western mindset. And in answer to the man's question, Jesus traveled that road with him––down that path of thinking–-and demonstrated that whatever he did, it wouldn't be enough. After telling Jesus that he had kept all the commandments––Jesus tells him that he still must go above and beyond by selling all he had and giving the proceeds to the poor. And this was impossible for that man––because it was in that request where he saw the problem––or should have seen the problem. The problem is our hearts and what we love. He loved money and his possessions––which he thought were a blessing and reward from God for a life well-lived. That's what we'll cover this week as we finish Matthew 19––because we're going to see the disciples completely dumbfounded by this episode with the rich young man. See, they thought the same way––his riches were the blessing and reward for a life well-lived, according to the law. They figured if this man could not be saved, then who can be saved?
