Passage: Matthew 8:1-17

Preacher: Rob Holster

Series: Gospel of the Kingdom

Summary:

Last time we finished Jesus' Sermon on the Mount––the most famous sermon ever delivered. It was the words of God himself––as Jesus spoke them on a mountainside so many years ago. I'm thankful that we have them, so we can know about the Kingdom of Heaven from the King himself. Now we move from Jesus' teaching to Jesus' doing––specifically healing. It's a very interesting change in focus from the book of Matthew. For three chapters now we have only heard what Jesus said, now we get into what he did––the miracles he worked. There's going to be a lot to learn from it. We'll start a two-part series Sunday where he heals a man with leprosy, a paralyzed young servant of a Roman officer, and Peter's mother in law. It's interesting because in the case of the leper, he says to Jesus, "If you are willing, you can heal me and make me clean." The Roman officer doesn't ask if he's willing but demonstrates amazing faith where one wouldn't think to find it. They're both very interesting cases that we need to look at because they bring up some important concepts––the willingness of Jesus and our faith. Somehow they go together––yet it's not a formula for guaranteed success.
