Passage: 1 Corinthians 6:12-20

Preacher: Rob Holster

Series: To God's Church

Summary:

This message we'll continue our journey through 1 Corinthians and we'll finish chapter 6. The subject is once again, sexual immorality. First century Corinth was an interesting place––an "anything goes" kind of place. There was what we might call, freedom. But only in the sense that freedom meant one was free to do whatever one wanted. Paul preached a message like that––he was big on freedom in Christ. He says in Galatians 5:1, "For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery." He says in 2 Corinthians 3:17, "Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom." For the Corinthians, however, this message was not fully understood. They took freedom to mean "I am free to do whatever I want." Paul's going to address that in 1 Corinthians 6:12-20. He uses the particular issue of sexual immorality to make his point. We truly are free in Christ. He says in Galatians 5:13, "For you were called to freedom, brothers. Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another." So we are free, but what we do with that freedom is very important. He's going to remind us that our bodies are very important to God. They are not throw-away skin suits meant for this life only. They are eternal. And they are a temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives within us. He finishes chapter 6 by saying, "You are not your own, for you were bought with a price, so glorify God in your body."
