Passage: 2 Samuel 12:1-14

Preacher: Rob Holster

Series: The Life of David

Summary:

We've been covering the life of David, and in 2 Samuel 11 he's gone from the mountaintop to a deep valley. The Lord had given him so much–military victories, grace, favor, rest, and a kingdom that would last forever. What more could he possibly want? We found out in chapter 11 that he wanted more. He wanted what his flesh desired. He went out of character for a moment and decided he would wander away from the Lord's path and venture into the way of sin. He was tempted–and he shunned any way of escape–so he gave in. But then the real trouble started when he tried to cover it up. This man of God resorted to murder in order to keep his sin quiet and his reputation in tact. And as we left him in the story last week, he thought he was free from being found out. He took Bathsheba to be his wife. The people would have thought he was such a great guy–just look at how he cared for the widows of his men who died on the battlefield. It was a shameful chapter in his life. But God will send him someone–someone who's going to remind him of who He is–and how his actions displeased the Lord. It's the first step toward repentance. God uses Nathan the prophet to get through to David–to rebuke him–to help him–to encourage him–to get him back on the right path.
